Indigenous Services

BCFMA’s Indigenous Services support meaningful reconciliation by providing culturally informed services that recognize and respect the unique rights, experiences, and needs of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.

We are committed to delivering services that are accessible, inclusive, culturally responsive, and grounded in respect of Indigenous Peoples’ rights. Through ongoing engagement with Indigenous partners, we continually adapt our programs, services and practices to better support Indigenous families and communities.

Our Indigenous Services model is designed to reduce barriers, improve access to support, and provide a welcoming experience for Indigenous clients navigating the family justice and child support systems.

How We Support Indigenous Clients

Our Indigenous Services focus on:

  • Creating safe spaces for listening, learning and understanding
  • Building strong relationships with Indigenous clients and their communities
  • Providing culturally informed service and support throughout a client’s experience with BCFMA
  • Connecting clients to community-based and cultural referral services and supports
  • Supporting clients in navigating the family justice and family (child and spousal) support systems
  • Inviting clients to include a trusted community support person in conversations with BCFMA, if they choose

Our Indigenous Services Team

Our dedicated team works alongside Indigenous clients and their communities to provide guidance, support, and connection throughout their journey with BCFMA.

Our team:

  • Receives ongoing cultural safety, trauma-informed, and Indigenous awareness training
  • Provides personalized support from enrolment through case management
  • Connects clients with culturally relevant resources, services and community supports
  • Works to improve accessibility and responsiveness for Indigenous clients and communities

Working in Partnership

We believe meaningful services are built through collaboration. BCFMA works with Indigenous communities, governments, and organizations to listen, gather feedback, and continuously improve our services.

Our approach is guided by the principle of “Nothing about us, without us,” ensuring Indigenous voices help inform the services we provide.

Through consultation and partnership, we continue to develop culturally relevant resources, improve accessibility, and create services that better reflect the diverse needs of Indigenous Peoples across British Columbia.
